U.S. Flights Severely Impacted by Global Cyber Outage
Over 1,200 flights scheduled within, into, or out of the United States were canceled on Sunday. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines were predominantly affected, according to data from FlightAware.com. This disruption follows a significant global cyber outage that occurred on Friday.
Airlines are grappling with the aftermath of the cyber incident, which led to widespread flight groundings on Friday. Delta stated on Sunday that it had no additional information beyond its Saturday update, which indicated that most of its technology systems have been restored. Despite this progress, the airline anticipates continued cancellations and delays throughout the weekend.
Furthermore, Delta has extended a travel waiver through Sunday to assist affected customers. According to CNBC, Delta is also offering additional pay to its crew members to staff flights during this recovery period. Attempts to reach United Airlines for comment were unsuccessful.
The global cyber outage was triggered by a software update from CrowdStrike, a major player in cybersecurity. This update not only affected airlines but also disrupted other critical services, including healthcare and banking.
