AMD to Acquire Silo AI for $665 Million in Cash
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has inked a deal to purchase Silo AI, a Helsinki-based developer of artificial intelligence models, for $665 million in cash. This strategic acquisition aims to help AMD close the gap on Nvidia Corp., currently dominating the AI hardware market. Silo AI, which touts itself as Europe’s largest private AI lab, counts major corporations such as Allianz SE, Unilever Plc, and Rolls-Royce (a Bayerische Motoren Werke AG unit) among its clientele.
Peter Sarlin, Silo AI's co-founder and CEO, will continue to lead his existing team, which will now be integrated into AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group. AMD, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, is widely considered Nvidia’s closest competitor in the burgeoning sector of AI hardware. Both companies excel in development and production of graphics chips, the leading technology for training large language models that support services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot.
A Strategic Move to Accelerate AI Initiatives
“Silo AI’s team of trusted AI experts and proven experience developing leadership AI models and solutions, including state-of-the-art LLMs built on AMD platforms, will further accelerate our AI strategy and advance the build-out and rapid implementation of AI solutions for our global customers,” stated AMD Senior Vice President Vamsi Boppana. This announcement saw AMD's shares rise by 1.4% in New York trading.
While AMD is relatively new to the AI development arena, the company is rapidly expanding its hardware and software portfolio to capitalize on this lucrative market. CEO Lisa Su has been spearheading this initiative with the introduction of MI300 accelerators, which are forecasted to generate approximately $4 billion in revenue this year. This figure is significantly higher than other competitors, including Intel Corp. However, it still pales in comparison to Nvidia’s anticipated $100 billion revenue from its data center chip business in the same period.
Enhancing AMD’s Competitive Edge
Silo AI specializes in crafting customized AI models and systems for various enterprises. This acquisition is the latest in a series of investments by AMD, accounting for $125 million in the past year alone, to bolster its suite of AI solutions. These efforts collectively aim to simplify the implementation and enhance the performance of AMD chip-based systems.
In terms of stock performance, AMD has seen its shares increase by about 20% in 2024. This is modest compared to the 38% rise of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index and Nvidia's staggering 165% gain. Despite this, AMD’s market capitalization has reached $286 billion, near its all-time high.
This acquisition of Silo AI marks a significant step for AMD in fortifying its position in the AI hardware niche, setting the stage for more competitive advancements against its rivals, particularly Nvidia.
