Apple Reveals Major Software Updates for iOS, macOS, and More
Apple has announced a slew of updates for its primary software platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and macOS. These updates introduce a variety of new features and enhancements across Apple devices, while the tech giant also continues to weave its artificial intelligence strategy into its products and services.
iOS 18: New Features and Enhancements
The new iOS 18 introduces a customizable home screen for iPhones, allowing users to rearrange icons freely and alter app icon colors for a personalized look. Control Center sees improvements, enabling users to add and reconfigure shortcuts to third-party applications. Privacy is bolstered with the "Lock An App" feature requiring Face ID for access and the ability to hide specific apps in a hidden folder.
The Messages app now supports scheduling texts and sending animated text effects, while the Mail app gains on-device categorization for better email organization. Apple is finally incorporating Rich Communication Services (RCS) into Messages, allowing for high-quality media and encrypted texts between iPhone and Android users, despite the persistent green chat bubbles.
A new tap-to-cash feature in the Wallet app lets users send cash by tapping their phones together with Apple Cash. Game Mode promises smoother gameplay by reducing background activity, and the Photos app receives a significant redesign with a photo grid and filter options for better image organization.
iPadOS 18 and visionOS 2
iPadOS 18 parallels many of iOS 18's features, such as the revamped Photos app and customizable home screen. It also introduces SharePlay enhancements, enabling users to control another person’s iPad remotely, and finally brings a Calculator app to the iPad. This app includes a "Math Notes" feature allowing users to solve handwritten equations using Apple Pencil.
visionOS 2, the system for the Vision Pro headset, can convert 2D photos to 3D using machine learning. Enhanced navigation options, like raising an open hand to access the home screen, are introduced. Mac Virtual Display is updated for larger virtual screens, and the Vision Pro will now support use on trains and flights. Availability expands to more countries by mid-year.
watchOS 11 and macOS Sequoia
watchOS 11 presents a new training mode to track workout impact over time using an exertion algorithm. It allows users to pause exercise rings for recovery or injury, and the new Vitals app offers deeper health insights, monitoring heart rate, temperature, and sleep patterns.
macOS Sequoia adopts many iOS and iPadOS 18 features, including "Math Notes" in the Calculator app and the expressive texts in Messages. A new iPhone Mirroring function lets users manage their iPhones from their Macs. Safari introduces article summarization to strip away web distractions. Apple's gaming toolkit receives an upgrade to facilitate more Windows-based games on macOS, with "Assassin's Creed" as a notable addition.
Apple traditionally releases its major software updates in the fall, coinciding with the launch of new iPhone models. Users can expect iPadOS, visionOS, watchOS, and macOS updates around the same period.
