Atlassian's New Offer for Startups
Before the term "product-led growth" became widely recognized, Atlassian was already ahead of the curve, offering free tiers for most of its productivity and developer tools. This typically includes free access for up to ten users with some restrictions. While this is beneficial for startups to begin using tools like Jira and Bitbucket, rapid growth often means outgrowing the limitations of the free tier.
For fledgling businesses that need expanded seats and more advanced features, Atlassian has recently introduced a new program. Startups with less than $10 million in funding now receive a year of free access for up to 50 users. The suite of products available under this initiative includes Jira, Confluence, Loom, Jira Product Discovery, Bitbucket, and Compass. The intent is clear: attract emerging companies into the Atlassian ecosystem and retain them as they scale.
Focus on Innovation
According to Atlassian CMO Zeynep Inanoglu Ozdemir, who joined the company in October, the company has consistently observed startups blossoming into mature enterprises on their platform. "It's clearly a win-win situation," she noted. "We love the idea of removing the burden of work management and project management, thereby allowing companies to concentrate on innovation. We thought, let's help the startup community by easing their initial journey."
Expanding Beyond Tech
Originally rooted in the tech community, Atlassian has shifted its focus to include non-tech startups as well. Their Jira project management and Confluence collaboration tools have found a broader audience, and the acquisition of the asynchronous video messaging service Loom in 2023 further underscores this commitment. Ozdemir anticipates a significant influx of non-tech companies into the Atlassian for Startups program.
Strategic Partnerships
To bolster the program's effectiveness, Atlassian has partnered with several accelerators and their portfolio companies. These include AWS Activate, Accel, Blackbird, and Menlo Ventures. Such collaborations are expected to streamline the onboarding process for participating startups, providing them with seamless access to Atlassian's robust suite of tools.
