Elon Musk Threatens Ban on Apple Devices in His Companies Over OpenAI Integration
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced a bold stance against Apple Inc. devices, threatening to ban them from his companies should they integrate OpenAI’s software at the operating system level. This adversarial position emerged in response to Apple’s recent presentation stating that OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot will be accessible through its Siri digital assistant.
Musk, who originally co-founded OpenAI but later had a falling-out with the San Francisco-based company, took to social media platform X—which he owns—to express his concerns. "If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies," Musk declared. "That is an unacceptable security violation."
Apple's AI Expansion
Apple Inc. is gearing up to introduce a suite of new AI features later this year, with the inclusion of the ChatGPT chatbot into Siri being a significant part of this expansion. This move is anticipated to enhance user interaction with Apple devices, leveraging advanced conversational AI technologies that OpenAI has been pioneering.
Musk's AI Ambitions
Elon Musk, who leads several high-profile ventures including Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), is not new to the AI race. He has recently unveiled his AI startup, xAI, which has developed its own chatbot named Grok. Neural networks and AI-assisted technologies have become a central focus for Musk’s vision of the future.
Security Concerns and Future Implications
Musk’s public declaration indicates his deep-seated concerns about security risks associated with integrating external AI technologies at a fundamental level within device operating systems. He underscored that visitors to his companies would need to "check their Apple devices at the door," where they would be secured in a Faraday cage, a device that blocks electromagnetic fields, ensuring that no digital communication could occur.
