EU Adds XXNX to List of Platforms Facing Strict Digital Regulations
The European Union (EU) announced on Wednesday that it is including the pornographic website XXNX in its category of online services that must adhere to stringent digital regulations. This decision brings the total number of such platforms to four, following the inclusion of Pornhub, XVideos, and Stripchat. These platforms are now classified as “very large online platforms” under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which imposes additional obligations to ensure the safety of internet users.
In addition to these adult websites, 21 mainstream platforms and search engines such as TikTok, Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, and Google are also subject to the DSA's regulations. Enacted last year, the DSA aims to shield users from illegal content and substandard products, with non-compliance resulting in significant penalties.
The European Commission, the EU's executive branch, issued a statement explaining that XXNX was included due to its substantial user base of 45 million Europeans, surpassing the threshold that triggers heightened oversight. By November, XXNX must implement measures to prevent minors from accessing its content through age verification tools. Furthermore, the site is required to provide researchers with access to publicly available data and maintain an advertising database.
The Commission emphasized that XXNX must also carry out thorough assessments and take steps to mitigate systemic risks associated with their services. These risks include the spread of illegal content and potential negative impacts on users' mental and physical well-being. Efforts to reach XXNX for comment were unsuccessful due to a nonfunctioning media contact form on the site.
Failure to comply with the DSA can result in fines up to 6% of a company's global revenue or even a ban within the EU. Last month, the European Commission sought clarification from Pornhub, which has contested its DSA classification, as well as from XVideos and Stripchat regarding the measures they are implementing to safeguard minors from accessing explicit content.
