Russia Contemplates Ban on Diesel Exports Amid Rising Domestic Prices
The Russian government is currently deliberating a potential ban on diesel exports as a response to increasing domestic prices, according to the Kommersant daily. This information comes from several unnamed sources within the industry. As the world's leading seaborne exporter of diesel, Russia surpasses even the United States in its export volumes. Diesel represents Russia's primary oil product export, amounting to approximately 35 million metric tons annually. Roughly three-quarters of this volume is transported via pipeline.
Last autumn, Russia temporarily halted diesel exports for about two weeks but subsequently resumed the pipeline deliveries to international markets. The country is already limiting gasoline exports and plans to enforce a total ban on these exports starting from August 1. One industry insider mentioned that a ban on diesel exports could be implemented if domestic prices continue to escalate dramatically; however, no official decision has been made at this time. The Russian energy ministry has yet to provide any comments on the matter.
