Meta Delays Meta AI Launch in Europe
Meta Platforms has decided to hold off on bringing its Meta AI to Europe, responding to a request from the Irish privacy regulator. The U.S. social media giant announced this decision on Friday, expressing disappointment over the delay mandated by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC).
The company had hoped to proceed with training its large language models (LLMs) using publicly shared content from Facebook and Instagram users. Despite incorporating regulatory feedback and informing European Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) since March, Meta is required to pause its plans.
"We're disappointed by the request from the Irish DPC, our lead regulator, on behalf of the European DPAs. This mandate instructs us to delay training our LLMs using public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram," Meta stated in a recent blog post.
Meta's plans to integrate user-generated content into its AI training processes in Europe must now wait for further regulatory clarity or approval. The ongoing scrutiny and its implications on AI development remain a key concern for tech companies operating within the region.
