Microsoft Halts Broad Release of New AI Feature Amid Security Concerns
Microsoft Corp. is pulling back an artificial intelligence feature, dubbed Recall, from broad distribution for new personal computers. The tech giant decided this course of action after facing scrutiny over potential security issues. Recall, which was introduced in May, creates a record of all user activities on their PCs. This functionality is designed to enhance task management, such as sorting emails or searching files.
Initially set for a wide release on June 18, Recall will now be made available only in the coming weeks, but exclusively within the Windows Insider Program. "We are adjusting the release model for Recall to leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community to ensure the experience meets our high standards for quality and security," Microsoft explained on its blog. The company further iterated that after gathering feedback from the Windows Insider Community, they plan to introduce Recall (preview) for all Copilot+ PCs soon.
The feature drew immediate criticism from security researchers, who warned that it could become a dangerous tool in the hands of bad actors capable of accessing and extracting the locally stored records gathered by Recall. In response, Microsoft assured that Recall would be initially shipped in an "off" position, requiring PC owners to actively opt-in to use it. Additional security measures would also be necessary for activation, the company stated.
