Germany to Minimize Use of Chinese Technology in 5G Networks
Efforts to reduce the presence of Chinese technology in Germany’s 5G wireless network have taken a significant step forward. In a collaborative stance, the German government and major mobile phone carriers have reportedly agreed to minimize the utilization of components from Chinese technology firms.
According to various German media outlets, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefonica Deutschland have come to a tacit agreement with government officials to ensure that the core network operations and data centres of the country’s 5G infrastructure will be devoid of technology from Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE by the year 2026.
The details of this agreement, however, are yet to be officially confirmed by the German interior ministry and the broader government, as they were not immediately available for comment when approached by reporters. The coordinated report from Sueddeutsche Zeitung, NDR, and WDR underscores the ongoing efforts to address cybersecurity and foreign influence concerns, pushing forward plans to localize and safeguard critical technological infrastructure.
