Samsung Launches Galaxy Ring, Entering the Smart Ring Arena
Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Ring at the Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris, France, marking its entry into the burgeoning smart ring market. These discreet wearables are designed to track health and fitness, providing an alternative to bulkier smartwatches and fitness bands. Samsung aims to capitalize on this emerging market, becoming the largest tech giant to offer a smart ring.
The Galaxy Ring, enhanced by Samsung's Galaxy AI platform, starts at $399 and is available in nine sizes. Customers can try on different sizes at Samsung retailers or order sizing kits online. Despite the swelling in my fingers from my flight and the previous night’s festivities, I found the size 12 to be the most comfortable. The ring comes in three colors: black, silver, and gold, and its design is both fashionable and inconspicuous.
Samsung claims the Galaxy Ring can last up to seven days on a single charge, with smaller sizes offering about five days of battery life. The ring’s built-in sensors provide comprehensive sleep-tracking capabilities, including heart and respiratory rate monitoring, movement tracking, and skin temperature changes for cycle monitoring.
In addition to sleep tracking, the Galaxy Ring offers several health features. These include heart-rate alerts, automatic workout detection for walking and running, and inactivity alerts. Samsung's Galaxy AI platform aggregates these metrics into an 'Energy Score,' a numerical value from 0 to 100 representing overall health and fitness. For example, a user’s score may decrease after an intense workout if they haven’t slept well, or increase with a combination of good rest and moderate exercise. This score is complemented by AI-powered Wellness Tips, which provide personalized recommendations to improve health metrics.
While Samsung’s Energy Score aligns with other health scoring systems like Oura’s Readiness score and Fitbit’s Daily Readiness Score, it's unclear whether the smart ring market will reach the popularity of modern smartwatches. Industry competitors like Apple have also considered developing their own smart rings, indicating potential growth in this sector.
As Samsung makes its entrance, the smart ring market awaits to see if it will rival or complement the smartwatch market and whether Samsung will maintain its position as the leading player.
