Samsung to Renew Wage Negotiations Amid Ongoing Strikes
Samsung Electronics Co. will resume wage negotiations with the union organizing strikes at its chipmaking plants, as prolonged labor action threatens to extend into a third week. Executives from Korea’s largest company are set to meet with union leaders on Friday to discuss a framework and schedule for the talks.
Unprecedented Labor Protests
This month has seen the biggest and most widespread labor protests in Samsung's half-century history. The largest union, which boasts over 30,000 members, has called for employees to walk off the job at an advanced AI memory chip plant and other factories around Seoul. The change in tactics comes after their campaign for higher pay appeared to be losing momentum.
Impact on Workforce and Industry
An initial rally saw thousands participating, though the total number of staff joining the strike remains unclear. The ongoing concern is that extended labor action could adversely affect Samsung, Korea’s prominent corporation, and possibly trigger similar movements across the recovering tech and chip industry.
