Stegosaurus Fossil "Apex" Sold for $44.6 Million at Auction
On Wednesday, a stegosaurus fossil known as "Apex" was sold at auction for an astonishing $44.6 million, according to Sotheby's. The anonymous buyer's identity has not been disclosed. Considered one of the most complete stegosaurus fossils ever found, Apex significantly surpassed its pre-sale estimate of $4 million to $6 million and broke the previous auction record for dinosaur fossils, which was $31.8 million set in 2020.
Apex's unique features and well-preserved state earned it a prominent place in history, having roamed the Earth approximately 150 million years ago. The auction took place amidst some frustration from academic paleontologists, who believe such specimens should be housed in museums or research centers that typically cannot compete with high auction prices. Nevertheless, Sotheby's mentioned that the buyer plans to explore the possibility of loaning Apex to an institution in the U.S.
The fierce bidding war saw six parties vying for Apex, with the stegosaurus finally being secured by the highest bidder. The stegosaurus, a well-known and distinctive dinosaur characterized by its pointed back plates, is described by Sotheby's Cassandra Hatton as "a coloring book dinosaur" due to its remarkable preservation. Measuring 11 feet (3.3 meters) tall and extending 27 feet (8.2 meters) from nose to tail, Apex was a large specimen that showed signs of having lived long enough to develop arthritis.
The fossil was discovered by commercial paleontologist Jason Cooper in 2022 on his property near the town of Dinosaur, Colorado, aptly named given its proximity to Dinosaur National Monument and the Utah border.
Future Display Possibilities
While much of the paleontological community prefers fossils to be kept in academic settings for research and public education, the sale of Apex offers a glimmer of hope as the new owner may consider loaning it to an educational institution. Such an arrangement could bridge the gap between private ownership and public accessibility, allowing people to study and appreciate this remarkable specimen while still honoring the buyer's interests.
Historical Significance
Apex's sale not only set a new financial benchmark for dinosaur fossils but also emphasized the ongoing allure and value of these ancient relics. As paleontology continues to capture the public's imagination, record-breaking auctions like this one highlight the balance between commercial interests and scientific endeavors. It remains to be seen how Apex will be utilized or displayed, but the fossil's new chapter in history is certain to spark further interest and discussion within both the auction world and the scientific community.
