Traveling Abroad: Coping with Network Outages
A recent trip to Ireland and Scotland turned into a technology nightmare when cellular service for many Americans traveling abroad suddenly went blank. On June 27, while exploring Edinburgh, a service disruption left many travelers without access to essential services such as Google Maps, ride-hailing apps, voice, and texting due to a chain reaction initiated by a networking issue with a third-party provider, Syniverse. This incident affected users of AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
While walking around in unfamiliar surroundings, the lack of connectivity posed significant challenges. Essential travel tools were inaccessible, creating a sense of panic and frustration. Eventually, the network issues were resolved, but the experience underscored the importance of being prepared for such occurrences. Here are some tips that can help travelers manage when network connectivity falters.
Using Wi-Fi
When cellular service fails, Wi-Fi becomes indispensable. Major cities often offer public Wi-Fi or accessible networks in cafes and restaurants. Using Wi-Fi allows you to maintain communication, access essential apps, and stay updated on network outages. For example, connecting to Wi-Fi at a pub enabled us to call an Uber and check out nearby attractions. Always look for Wi-Fi hotspots to stay connected.
Screenshot Important Items
In the absence of cellular service, digital tickets and reservations become hard to access. Taking screenshots of important items like tickets or reservation confirmations can save the day. This tactic proved invaluable during our visit to Edinburgh, where Wi-Fi was spotty at certain attractions such as Edinburgh Castle. Screenshots of our train tickets from Edinburgh to Inverness ensured our journey went smoothly, and it’s a handy practice for restaurants and receipts as well.
Download Offline Versions of Google Maps
Google Maps' offline mode can be a lifesaver during connectivity issues. Downloading offline maps lets you navigate unfamiliar cities without worrying about network availability. The process is simple: use Wi-Fi to access Google Maps, search for the city, swipe through the information card, and select “Download offline map.” This feature ensures you can find your way even without an active internet connection and is beneficial for both travelers and residents of large cities.
Stay Calm and Troubleshoot
If you lose network connectivity, staying calm is crucial. Resetting your phone might help, but it could also be a broader issue with your service provider. Knowing how to leverage tools like Wi-Fi, screenshots, and offline maps can make a significant difference. Additionally, taking a break from the constant online world might provide a refreshing change.
Despite the initial stress, our trip continued smoothly after regaining connectivity. These strategies can help any traveler navigate through temporary service disruptions, ensuring their journey remains enjoyable and stress-free.
