Tencent's Dungeon & Fighter Mobile Breaks Records in China
Dungeon & Fighter Mobile, Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s latest release, has achieved remarkable success on iOS in China, according to Sensor Tower's research. In its first month, the game more than doubled the sales of Tencent's previous best-seller, Honor of Kings. Commencing on May 21, the Nexon Co.-produced game raked in an impressive $270 million within 30 days, topping both download and revenue charts for Apple devices in the country.
This stellar performance makes Dungeon & Fighter Mobile the most notable debut for Tencent this year. The game stands out as a strong contender to generate sustained revenue, similar to the enduring success of Honor of Kings, China’s top-grossing game for many years.
Precision Timing and Strong Marketing
Tencent accelerated Dungeon & Fighter Mobile’s release to May following enthusiastic feedback during testing phases. The company has heavily marketed the action role-playing game in the lead-up to its launch, leveraging targeted WeChat ads triggered by specific keywords related to the game.
Delayed but Unhindered Launch
Initially released internationally some years ago, Dungeon & Fighter Mobile's arrival in China was delayed due to a temporary halt in Beijing's approval of new game releases. Despite this, the delay had no adverse effects on its popularity in the world’s largest gaming market.
Future Implications for Tencent
With Dungeon & Fighter Mobile's undeniable success, Tencent is poised to rejuvenate growth within its pivotal domestic games division. The game not only sets new records but also reinforces Tencent's standing in the competitive Chinese gaming industry.
