Initial signs of recovery emerged in late 2022 and early 2023, following a severe drop in shipments. Gartner noted a 30% year-over-year decline in PC shipments in Q1 2023, which slightly improved to a 16% drop in Q2 2023. This turnaround comes after the pandemic-induced surge in demand, which saw consumers and businesses heavily investing in new systems for remote work and entertainment. Consequently, the market faced reduced demand in subsequent months, leading to sharp declines in sales.
Impact on Major Industry Players
The downturn significantly affected major players in the PC market, including software vendors and chip manufacturers. Microsoft experienced a 39% decline in Windows OEM sales in the fiscal second quarter of 2023. Similarly, Intel and AMD reported steep declines in their PC chip sales, with Intel's Client Computing Group revenue plummeting 38% in Q1 2023 compared to the previous year, and AMD's Client group witnessing a 65% year-over-year revenue drop.
AI PCs: The Next Growth Frontier
The industry's recovery is also closely linked to the burgeoning AI PC market. AI PCs are characterized by their specialized neural processing units, with companies like Microsoft leading the charge through its Copilot+PCs initiative.
