TikTok Aims to Rival Amazon's Prime Day with "Deals For You Days" Sales Event
The popular social network TikTok is ready to square off against Amazon's much-anticipated Prime Day event in July. On Thursday, TikTok announced its "Deals For You Days" sales event, set to kick off in the U.S. on July 9. This comes shortly after Amazon's disclosure that its annual Prime Day will occur on July 16 and 17. Given Prime Day's historical success, numerous retailers have piggybacked on the event, launching their own competing sales. TikTok has now joined the ranks of these retailers.
The "Deals For You Days" event promises enticing offers on a wide array of products, including fashion and beauty items, backyard entertainment essentials, decor, and summer reading bestsellers. Much like Amazon's Prime Day, TikTok Shop will feature exclusive deals on select merchandise. Notable brands participating include L'Oréal Paris, Maybelline New York, NYX Professional Makeup, Our Place, Too Faced, and Zwilling USA.
A unique aspect of TikTok's sales event is the content challenges for short videos and LIVE shopping events. Brands and merchants will engage with their followers, showcasing favorite products and bestsellers while offering real-time discounts during these LIVE sessions.
Having placed significant bets on its e-commerce endeavors, TikTok is targeting substantial growth, aiming for a market size as large as $17.5 billion this year. This sales event is a clear move to compete with one of the U.S.’s largest shopping spectacles, Prime Day. Additionally, TikTok Shop is vying against Chinese-owned companies Temu and Shein, which have made considerable inroads into the U.S. market.
Last year, it was projected that TikTok could accumulate around $20 billion in global gross merchandise value in 2023, with a significant portion of that coming from Southeast Asia. Now, the company is focused on replicating that success in the U.S. market.
TikTok’s ambitions in e-commerce align with industry trends, as social commerce is expected to surge dramatically in the coming years. Social commerce sales are forecasted to more than double, reaching $144.5 billion by 2027, up from $67 billion in 2023. This projected growth underlines TikTok’s strategic push into the U.S. e-commerce landscape with the "Deals For You Days" event.
