US Telecommunication Customers Face Connectivity Woes Abroad
Customers of major US telecommunications firms, including AT&T Inc., T Mobile US Inc., and Verizon Communications Inc., are encountering connectivity issues while roaming outside of their home countries. Verizon confirmed that the problem stems from a "third-party communications provider" struggling to facilitate voice and data connections for US-based travelers overseas.
In a statement, Verizon revealed that it is "actively working" with its roaming provider to rectify the issue. Despite this, approximately 70% of calls and data connections are still being completed successfully, according to spokesperson Richard Young. Multiple carriers appear to be affected by the outage, as indicated by Verizon’s communications.
Representatives for AT&T and T-Mobile US have not yet responded to requests for comment. The connectivity problems have prompted several customers, including notable figures like actor Patrick Schwarzenegger and Nikhil Goel, Archer Aviation Inc.'s chief commercial officer, to express their frustrations on social media platform X.
One affected Verizon customer, Nick Ponton, a 38-year-old producer from New York, found himself and his mother stranded in Seaham, a coastal town in the UK, when their phones stopped working around 6 p.m. local time on Wednesday. Unable to use a ride-hailing app, Ponton had to walk along a highway until he managed to flag down an off-duty taxi.
The situation underscores a significant issue for US telecom customers relying on their providers for seamless international connectivity. Problems of this nature can not only disrupt travel plans but also pose safety risks, as demonstrated by Ponton's experience.
