Verizon Sees Strong Wireless Subscriber Growth in Q2
Verizon Communications notably exceeded expectations in the second quarter, driven by substantial demand for its flexible wireless plans that include discounted streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. The telecom giant announced an addition of 148,000 net monthly bill-paying wireless phone subscribers from April to June, surpassing analysts' forecasts of 127,870 new additions, as per Visible Alpha data. This follows a previous quarter where Verizon lost 68,000 subscribers.
Flexible Plans Proving Effective
Since the introduction of its myPlan offering in May of last year, Verizon has seen tangible results in attracting and retaining subscribers. The myPlan service allows customers to tailor their plans by paying for only what they need, a strategy that has enabled Verizon to better compete with rivals AT&T and T-Mobile in the highly competitive U.S. telecom market. The company has also entered into strategic partnerships with various streaming services, providing promotional bundles that include platforms such as Netflix, Warner Bros Discovery's Max, and Disney's services. Additionally, Verizon increased the prices of some older plans in March to incentivize customers to migrate to the new plans.
Mixed Performance in Consumer Business
Despite the positive subscriber growth, Verizon's consumer segment reported a net loss of 8,000 wireless retail postpaid phone subscribers in the latest quarter. However, this is a marked improvement compared to the 136,000 losses recorded in the same period last year. Nevertheless, the company fell short in revenue, posting $32.8 billion, which is slightly under the $33.06 billion anticipated by analysts, according to LSEG data.
Impact on Stock and Future Prospects
Analysts note that Verizon has been impacted by a historically low rate of phone upgrades, a trend that may shift with the upcoming release of Apple's latest iPhones. Despite these challenges, the company’s stock price has risen by 10% so far this year, reflecting investor confidence in its strategic direction.
