Video-Game Celebrity Dr Disrespect Mired in Controversy
Guy Beahm, widely known as Dr Disrespect, commands a significant online following with 4.7 million subscribers on YouTube. He has collaborated with prominent entities such as the San Francisco 49ers and served as a spokesperson for Mountain Dew. However, his career faced a significant setback four years ago when Amazon-owned Twitch banned him for violating community guidelines. The chat platform Discord also terminated its partnership with him following a report from an unnamed “trusted industry peer.”
The specific reasons for Dr Disrespect’s ban from Twitch remained undisclosed, but insiders revealed that Beahm was allegedly removed for exchanging sexually explicit messages and inquiring about the plans of a minor through Twitch’s direct chat. These allegations surfaced on social media last week in a post by former Twitch employee Cody Conners, which has since gone viral. The news outlet The Verge also reported similar reasons for his removal, sourcing another undisclosed individual.
This situation underscores ongoing challenges faced by social media companies in managing troubling behavior by influential figures who significantly drive their revenue. Beahm, known for his popular Call of Duty gameplay, initially attracted 4.5 million fans on Twitch. In 2022, he announced a legal settlement with Twitch, emphasizing that neither party admitted to any wrongdoing. Though Beahm did not respond to requests for comments, he stated on X that he is bound by “legal obligations from the settlement” and maintained that he did nothing wrong.
Twitch has not commented on the situation either. Following his ban, Beahm re-established his career on YouTube. Ryan Wyatt, former head of YouTube Gaming, disclosed to Bloomberg that he was unaware of the reasons behind the Twitch ban. While YouTube, the 49ers, and PepsiCo (maker of Mountain Dew) have not commented, PepsiCo noted that it hasn’t collaborated with Beahm for some time.
Recent developments have further complicated Beahm’s professional life. His video-game studio, Midnight Society, announced on Monday that it had terminated its relationship with him after discussions with involved parties. On the same day, Beahm livestreamed gameplay of Elden Ring on YouTube and concluded his broadcast by indicating plans to "step away."
